 SCHOOL MEALS

Baugo Community Schools students have healthy choices in their school cafeterias. Baugo Community Schools Food Service is serving school meals that meet tough new federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all of the nutrition they need to succeed at school.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits for saturated fat and portion size.

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of either the vegetable/fruit
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
  • More whole grains
  • And less sodium

The meals are "offer vs. serve"  This allows your student to decline some of the food offered.  At lunch the components offered are: meats/meat alternates; grains; fruit; vegetables; and fluid milk.  Under "offer vs. serve", a student must take at least three components in the required serving sizes.  One selection MUST be at least the required service size from either the fruit or vegetable component.  Some of the main entrees may count as two food groups such as sandwiches, pizza, mini corn dogs, or calzones.

At breakfast, students are offered at least four required food components (items).   However, students must select at least three food items.   The components (items) are:  1.  grains (with optional meats/meat alternates allowed); 2.  fruit/juice/vegetable; and  3.  milk.   Under "Offer vs. Serve", a student must select at least 3 food items, one of which must be the required service size of fruit or vegetable.  Some of the main entrees for breakfast may count as two food items such as mini pancakes,  sausage pancake wrap,  cream cheese bagel or Apple Cinnamon French Toast.
